Mechanical effects can significantly affect fluid flow and contaminant transport processes in rock fractures because the stress/displacement can alter the geometrical structure of fractures, which consequently influences the hydraulic and transport properties of fractures. Quantification of the impacts of mechanical process on fluid flow and contaminant transport in rock fractures is important for performance and safety assessments of many engineering applications, such as geological disposal of nuclear waste and CO2, underground storage of oil and gas, extraction and storage of geo-energy, and remedial grouting of dam foundations. In this session, we invite contributions that focus on analytical, experimental, or numerical analysis of mechanical effects on fluid flow and contaminant transport in fractures to advance our understanding of stress/displacement-dependent flow behaviour of simple (Newtonian) or complex (non-Newtonian) fluids and/or transport characteristics of reactive or non-reactive solutes in rock fractures.
